AI Keyword Research

AI keyword research means finding the full questions and prompts buyers type into ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI — then optimizing to be cited in those answers. It's less about short keywords with volume and more about intent-rich prompts. Here's a practical method, end to end.

1What AI Keyword Research Is

AI keyword research is the practice of finding the full questions and prompts people ask AI assistants, then optimizing your content to be cited in those answers. Where classic keyword research targets short phrases like "AI CRM," AI keyword research targets the sentence a real buyer types: "what's the best AI CRM for a 5-person startup that already uses Slack?"

That shift changes what you optimize for. You're no longer only chasing a ranking position — you're trying to be the source an AI engine quotes when it answers a specific, intent-loaded prompt. For the strategic backdrop, see AI visibility vs traditional SEO.

2From Keywords to Prompts

Three practical differences flow from that shift:

  • Longer and conversational. Prompts are full sentences with context, constraints, and qualifiers — not two-word head terms.
  • Volume matters less. There's no reliable public "prompt volume" metric, and prompts are so varied that classic tools under-count them. Intent and specificity beat raw numbers.
  • The win condition is citation, not position. Success is being one of the few sources the AI quotes — so citability and structure matter as much as topical relevance.

3Discover the Prompts Buyers Actually Ask

The biggest mistake teams make is targeting the prompts they wish buyers used. Buyers use plain language. Pull it from where it already exists:

Sales & support

Call recordings and support tickets are gold — they contain the exact language buyers use before they've been trained by your marketing.

Reddit & communities

Category subreddits and forums show unprompted, real questions. These also feed Perplexity and ChatGPT citations, so they're doubly useful.

Autocomplete & PAA

Search autocomplete and 'People Also Ask' expose question phrasing at scale. Use them as seeds, then rewrite into conversational prompts.

Ask the AIs

Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity what people commonly ask about your category. It's a fast way to surface prompt patterns you can then validate.

4Map Intent Into Five Prompt Types

Once you have raw prompts, sort them by intent. Five types carry the most commercial weight:

Best-for prompts — 'best AI CRM for startups' (shortlist intent)
Alternative prompts — 'X alternatives' (switch intent)
Comparison prompts — 'X vs Y' (decision intent)
Problem-driven prompts — 'how to reduce SaaS churn' (job-to-be-done)
Trust/fit prompts — 'best tool for small teams' (qualification)

5Prioritize Ruthlessly

You can't win every prompt at once — especially on a younger domain. Score each prompt against four questions:

Buying intent — would winning this prompt put you in front of a ready buyer?
Winnability — can you realistically be the best answer, given your authority today?
Coverage gap — do competitors get cited here while you don't?
Business value — does the prompt map to a product you actually sell?

The sweet spot is the overlap: high buying intent, realistically winnable, competitors already cited, and mapped to something you sell. Build content for those first, structure it for citability, then monitor whether AI starts quoting you. If you want a broader roadmap, our GEO primer and guide to AI SEO tools are good next reads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI keyword research?

AI keyword research is the practice of finding the full questions and prompts people type into AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI, then optimizing content to be cited in those answers. Unlike classic keyword research, which targets short phrases, it targets conversational, intent-rich prompts — often full sentences.

How is it different from traditional keyword research?

Traditional keyword research optimizes for short queries and ranking positions. AI keyword research optimizes for longer, conversational prompts and for being cited within a synthesized answer. The unit shifts from 'keyword with search volume' to 'prompt with buying intent' — and there's no reliable public 'prompt volume' metric yet, so intent and specificity matter more than raw numbers.

Where do I find the prompts buyers actually ask?

Mine real language from sales call recordings, support tickets, and Reddit or community threads in your category; use autocomplete and 'People Also Ask' as seeds; and ask the AI assistants themselves what people commonly ask about your category. Then rewrite each into the natural phrasing a buyer would type.

Do keyword volumes still matter for AI search?

Less than before. AI prompts are long-tail and varied, so classic volume tools under-count them. Prioritize by buying intent and how winnable the prompt is, using volume only as a rough directional signal for the head terms that feed into those prompts.

How many prompts should I target to start?

Start with 10–15 high-intent prompts that cover your key commercial surfaces — best-for, alternatives, comparisons, and problem-driven questions. That's enough to shape a content plan and to monitor, without drowning in noise. Expand once you see which ones move.
